Much has changed since 1980, when PHILIPS developed the first compact fluorescent lamp: The size and weight of the lamps have decreased, while luminous flux and colour rendering have constantly increased. If a ballast and a starter are already integrated in the base, the compact fluorescent lamps can be screwed directly into the corresponding lamp sockets: So-called energy-saving lamps have common bases such as screw bases E14 and E27 or bayonet bases B22D.
