The DIN EN 12464 directive regulates the lighting of workplaces both indoors and outdoors throughout Europe. Although luminaires and types of lighting vary depending on the production site, architecture and activity, workplace lighting must nevertheless comply with these points of the Workplace Ordinance:

• Sufficient light colour and colour rendering
• Avoidance of annoying shadows and glare

DGUV generally recommends an illuminance of 500 lux at the workplace, which increases as the activities become more demanding for the human eye. Production facilities in precision mechanics or sensor technology already require 750 lux to enable precise and high-contrast vision. Illuminance (in lux) depends on the illuminated surface and the luminous flux (in lm/lumen) of the luminaire.
